Numbness

The local anaesthetic injections used during your surgery will cause your face to feel quite numb in places, which is quite normal. This numbness will take around 6-8 hours to wear off, and during that time you should avoid drinking hot beverages as this numbness may result in burns.

Your bone grafting procedure may cause stretching or damage to some of the surrounding nerves in your jaw bone, which may result in prolonged numbness for up to three months. In severe cases, the numbness may take up to 18 months to recede, and on occasion may even be permanent, particularly near the graft donor site.
