Special Conditions

If you have had surgery on the maxilla (top jaw), particularly where the surgery is close to the maxillary sinus, you should take care not to blow your nose for ten days post-operatively. You may also notice a small amount of bleeding from your nose, as surgery in the sinus drains into the nose.

Occasionally you may have a nasal pack placed during surgery which will normally be removed 24 hours post-operatively on the ward before discharge.

If you are treated under general anaesthesia you may be anaesthetised using a “nasal tube”, which can produce some soreness and crusted blood within the nose. You should leave the area alone to heal and refrain from picking at it.
