Zygomatic Dental Implants

A Teeth Replacement Solution For Those With The Most Severe Form Of Bone Loss

If you’ve been told you are not a candidate for conventional dental implants or that dentures are your only option, zygomatic implants were designed with you in mind. Zygomatic implants, also known as rescue implants, are an alternative to traditional dental implants and bone grafting when there is insufficient bone in the upper jaw.

Zygomatic implants and the zygomatic process

Patients who have moderate, advanced, or even extreme resorption in the upper jaw and do not have enough bone structure to support dental implants would benefit from zygomatic implants—a non-removable appliance that attaches to the zygoma, or cheekbone. The procedure does not involve bone grafting (or the lengthy six-month healing period), so implants can be placed immediately.

Zygomatic implants are not your conventional dental implant. In terms of appearance and structure, they are considerably longer, ranging from 35-55mm, in order to successfully anchorinto the Zygoma. They are typically made of titanium and placed at a 45-degree angle relative to the jaw bone, allowing for maximal stability for the related prosthetic teeth.

At Wisdom Specialist Centre, we begin with a consultation in which we use advanced technology to gather information pertaining to your case. We use pre-surgical 3D planning with CBCT scans to develop a comprehensive overview. This ensures that each implant is placed with precision and accuracy.

During surgery, we anchor long implant screws in the zygoma, a thick and solid bone near the sinus, also known as the cheekbone. Typically, the process requires the use of two zygomatic implants in combination with two to four traditional implants. The traditional implants are placed in the anterior region, toward the front of the jaw where the upper front teeth were previously located. If you have teeth that need to be extracted prior to zygomatic implant placement, they can be removed during this single surgery.

The Benefits Of Zygomatic Implants

Zygomatic implant surgery is safe and predictable, a procedure that is performed every day by our highly skilled surgeons at Wisdom Specialist Centre. This revolutionary treatment allows us to send our patients out the door with a fully functional set of teeth. The benefits include:

  • Immediate loading of fixed teeth

Zygomatic implants offer an unprecedented element of efficiency In comparison to the conventional dental implant placement process, which entails multiple surgeries and bone graft healing periods lasting multiple months before a patient receives their prosthetic teeth. With Zygomatic implant treatment, patients’ final prosthetic teeth are loaded within an astonishing one week after surgery.

  • No bone grafting

Zygomatic implants operate completely independently of the maxilla (the upper jaw bone), anchoring into the denser zygomatic bone (the cheekbone). Thus, a solution is provided for severe cases of maxillary atrophy, avoiding tedious bone grafting procedures to rebuild the maxilla and place conventional implants, with the added benefits of efficiency and stability

  • Single surgery

Incredibly, the full Zygomatic procedure is completed in a single surgery, including removal of pre-existing implants, teeth and any related infections (if necessary), and the subsequent placement of all Zygomatic implants.

  • A favourable aesthetic outcome

As for one of the major concerns with all dental procedures – how will it look? Zygomatic implants reach and even exceed the aesthetic threshold for restorative treatments like dentures, offering a fixed prosthesis that emulates the natural appearance of both the gum and teeth. • Predictable outcomes

Although a relatively new technique, since 1988 Zygomatic implants have demonstrated extremely high success rates, which, combined with Dr. Zoud’s extensive planning and precision, offer patients reliable and long-lasting results.

  • Affordability

Due to the surgical prowess and extensive specialised training required to become accredited in the placement of Zygomatic implants, procedures are often slightly more expensive per implant than conventional dental implants. However, the cost of these life-changing procedures compensates in terms of time, success, and overall satisfaction, as well as eliminating the cost of additional surgeries such as sinus lifts and bone grafting.

What do they look like?

Now that the benefits have been discussed, the best way to showcase the aesthetics of zygomatic implants is through some real cases that we have undertaken at the Wisdom Specialist Centre. Below are the pre and post operative x-rays and photos.

Does Zygomatic Implant Surgery Hurt?

At Wisdom Specialist Centre, your safety and comfort are paramount. For a more comfortable experience, our doctors recommend that this type of surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic at one of our affiliated private hospitals. Any discomfort experienced following zygomatic implants is similar to that of regular bone grafting procedures. Most of our patients are surprised by how easy their recovery is. You may have mild bruising, and any pain can be easily managed with prescription pain medications.

A solution for those who have been told they have the most severe form of bone loss, Zygomatic implants allow our patients to achieve maximum oral function and an aesthetically pleasing smile.
